Tensioned fabric structure meets challenge to create a unique distinctive look.
Challenge! Service Stations

Thanks to a cost-effective, innovative design making good use of Shelter-Rite® architectural fabric by Seaman Corporation, Challenge! Service Stations clearly stand out from all others in New Zealand.

Over pump islands, white canopies of tensioned fabric are supported by a tubular steel frame and perimeter truss, creating four clearly recognizable conical peaks. In addition, the retail features an entryway canopy which meshes nicely into the forecourt design. Station signage is minimal, so creating a distinctive look is extremely important.

The white PVC canopy fabric allows transmission of about 15 percent of the light to produce a soft, even light below it during the day. At night, concealed lights project upwards to reflect off the fabric, resulting in a recognizable glow in the peaks while lighting up the pump areas below.

Alex Ross and Associates served as project architects, creating the low key, modern design using materials that would withstand the rigors of time and climate.

The canopies were manufactured and installed by Structurflex Limited, using Seaman's Shelter-Rite 8028 MW Tedlar® coated, polyester reinforced PVC fabric. Designed for fast, efficient erection, the lightweight canopies are both durable and nearly maintenance-free.

More than mere roofing, Shelter-Rite brings a full range of desirable qualities to the project. "Square meter by square meter, a canopy adds a promotional aspect to your building and underlines the style and design of your projects," said Murray Higgs, managing director of Structurflex.
